Parent & Child Aquatics (6 months - 3 years)

The foundation of the Parent & Child Aquatics classes is a set of basic skills that help prepare infants and young children to become comfortable in the water, so they are willing and ready to learn to swim.   In addition to orienting young children to the water, these classes provide parents with information and techniques to create safer aquatic experiences for their children.  Children learn basic skills including adjusting to the water environment; showing comfort maintaining a front or back position in the water (assisted or unassisted); and demonstrating breath control (blowing bubbles or voluntarily fully submerging under water).  An adult is required to participate in the water with their child for each class.

The Parent & Child Aquatics programming is divided into two age-based levels to accommodate early swimmers at different developmental stages - Water Babies (6-18 months), Water Tots (18 months – 3 years).

WATER BABIES (6-18 months) introduces basic skills to parents & children.  Parents learn how to safely work with their child in the water, including how to appropriately support and hold their child in the water and how to prepare and encourage their child to participate fully and try the skills.  Children receive an introduction to basic skills that lay a foundation for learning to swim.  In addition, parents are introduced to several water safety topics.

WATER TOTS (18 months – 3 years) builds on the skills introduced in Water Babies.  Participants improve on these skills and learn more advanced skills in Water Tots and work on some independent water skills.
