Isle a la Cache Museum presents Wake Up with Warblers: Birding and Bird-friendly Coffee

Start your morning with a delicious cup of bird-friendly coffee and a light treat as we welcome spring migration! After a brief introduction, we’ll explore the trails at Isle a la Cache in search of colorful warblers heading north. Then join Greg DuBois for an engaging talk on how the coffee we drink can help protect migratory birds through the Smithsonian Bird Friendly certified coffee program. Bring your binoculars and favorite mug and discover how small choices can make a big difference. DuBois is the vice president and program director for the Will County Audubon Society. He guides birding tours at Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie and for Illinois Audubon Society’s annual adventure series. His latest contribution to the quarterly Illinois Audubon Magazine is a photo essay from his 2024 bird photography tour in Cuba. Registration required by Thursday, May 7: 815-722-9301.

Is your first language Spanish, Polish, Hindi or anything but English? Would you like the opportunity to practice your newly-learned English skills in an informal, non-judgmental setting? The ESL Reading Group is for any adult whose first language is not English. Learn more about American culture and customs while speaking English, practicing writing and listening English, with others who are learning English, too. We meet weekly with other multi-lingual adults and an English-speaking instructor. The group is led by a trained English as a Second Language instructor. Registration is required for this event. ICash: Office of Illinois State Treasurer Michael W. Frerichs

Learn about ICash, the Unclaimed Property division of the Illinois State Treasurer's Office, that connects people with their unclaimed property. The State Treasurer is holding more than $3.5 billion in unclaimed funds for Illinoisans! An ICash table will be setup in our lobby from 10am-2pm on Tuesday, May 12th.

During Living History Encounters, you may find cooks, seamstresses, voyageurs, soldiers or craftsmen sharing their talents in the Traders Cabin. A trio of performers will feature old time favorites such as “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy,” “Bei Mir Bist Du Schon,” “In the Mood” and “Don’t Sit Under the Apple Tree,” in this 1940’s radio hour that is perfect for all ages! While answering musical requests from soldiers and loved ones during wartime, Patti, Maxine and LaVerne will entertain the “studio audience” with Andrews Sisters-style tunes and choreography, Abbott and Costello comedy sketches, and a touching tribute to Veterans of the United States Armed Forces. Get a head start on celebrating Pollinator Week 2026 at this family-friendly event! Learn about the insects and the animals that perform the important task of pollinating plants, especially those that provide us with much of the food we eat. See live bats and learn about their roles in pollination from our friends at Incredible Bats. Find out how to support pollinators at home with insect hotels, gardens and plants native to our region. Try your hand at exciting pollination challenges, crafts and activities. Buzz by this outdoor summer party for the birds, bees, bats and more! There will be something fun for everyone! The Nature Foundation of Will County will be hosting a native plant sale. Tacos Maui food truck and Kona Ice will be onsite, so grab a tasty bite to eat while you enjoy your day at the island. No registration required.

Visit beautiful Isle a la Cache Preserve in Romeoville during the Pollinator Party celebration and shop a wide selection of native plants perfect for the pollinators in your life! Experts will be on hand to help you select plants and to answer questions. Plus, many other free resources will be available. Plants will be $3 per plug, and they will be sold on a first-come, first-served basis while supplies last. No online sale is scheduled. A list of available plants will be available at a later date. No registration required.

Grand Haven Community Garage Sale

Celebrate Juneteenth with renowned storyteller Oba William King! Oba will weave his riveting drum performance with his spellbinding traditional and historical tales for a special evening for the whole family. Oba William King is a storyteller of high energy, enthusiasm, a wealth of tales, and over 25 years experience. He is popular with kids and adults of all ages, offering traditional stories and fables, historical tales, stories he writes, music, movement, joy, literacy, in performances and workshops, always emphasizing unity. He has appeared at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, the International Storytelling Center, and the National Association of Black Storytellers. This library program has been made possible through a partnership between the White Oak Library District and the Village of Romeoville. Registration is required for this event.
