For this Tween Master Chef we will be making Strawberry Sago.

White Oak Library presents The Inspiring True Story of the Twelve Navy Nurse POWs in WWII

In January 1942, twelve American navy nurses stationed at a makeshift hospital, were taken as prisoners under the Empire of Japan. Despite being prisoners, the nurses maintained rank and provided nursing care to thousands of inmates, providing care and compassion to wounded soldiers and prisoners. As World War II raged on, food rations dwindled and mass starvation began, yet the twelve nurses continued to provide care. By the time of their liberation, all had their own health problems and each weighed less than 100 pounds. All twelve came home. Travel back in time with local journalist and author Dr. Emilie Le Beau Lucchesi to learn about these incredible women, and the inspiring impact they had on their fellow inmates. This library program has been made possible through a partnership between the White Oak Library District and the Village of Romeoville.  Registration is required for this event and will close on November 4, 2026 @ 7:00pm.

During this Living History Encounter, experience history in action with live demonstrations, including a blacksmith transforming raw metal into everyday tools. See demonstrations of various weapons by Alexander Hamilton’s New York Provincial Company of Artillery and meet voyageurs and settlers who journeyed to this land and made it their home. The big questions we all ask at some point in our lives – Who am I? Why am I here? What does it all mean? – are often explored though philosophy, poetry and psychology. This workshop examines how writing memoirs, telling our own stories and recording our lives can help us search for those same answers. Drawing inspiration from two Illinois novelists, Ray Bradbury and Ernest Hemingway, we’ll see how even fiction can be deeply autobiographical and how their approaches to storytelling can guide us in writing our own. This Illinois Humanities Road Scholar Program by Aaron J. Lawler is divided into three interactive parts: personal identity, reflections becoming reality and learning as transformation. Isle a la Cache Museum is an accessible facility. Illinois Humanities(Opens in a new window) is a statewide nonprofit organization that activates the humanities through free public programs, grants and educational opportunities that spark conversation, foster reflection, build community and strengthen civic engagement for everyone in Illinois.
