Tree City USA
Since 2021, the Arbor Day Foundation has named the Village of Romeoville a Tree City USA and also awarded them a Tree City Growth Award four years in a row. These awards are granted to communities who take an active participation in ensuring effective urban forest management through a variety of tasks and goals laid out by the foundation. There are 19,500 incorporated communities in U.S. and 3,600 (18%) are Tree Cities. Of those communities, only 467 (2%) are growth award winners.
The Village is taking an active role in conservation and the promotion of green activities. For the last number of years, residents can volunteer their time a few hours each month to help clean up and maintain O’Hara Woods via a partnership with the Conservation Foundation. The Conservation and Sustainability committee was created in 2023, which helps generate ideas and recommendations on the development and implementation of conservation measures and sustainable practices. Annually, on Arbor Day, the Village plants a tree at R. C. Hill Elementary with the winner of the Clean Up Week coloring contest.
