Uptown Square Development

Today, you will see the newly developed Uptown Square. The new brand mark for Uptown Square is intended to represent the spirit of this new community place. Two brightly colored rectangles come together to form a square. In the upper left corner, three colorful squares also intermingle with one another in an active way.

Together, these forms represent the transformation you see today, which is an area that has been transformed from what was once a blighted area to one that:
  • A place where the community can come together
  • Attracts new businesses
  • Attracts people from all over the region
  • Creates opportunities for future development
  • Encourages redevelopment of existing businesses
  • Provides additional space for community events
  • Provides attractive streetscapes
  • Variety of activities

Developing Uptown Square
Although the Village of Romeoville lacks a traditional downtown area, the Village has a 40-acre established site that is defined as Uptown Square (PDF) . The site was originally developed as Hampton Park Terrace in the mid 1960s and over the years we have seen much of the retail development eventually began to migrate westward along Weber Road creating an underutilized and blighted area.
Planning & Revitalization
To help revitalize this area, staff along with community stakeholders, set goals and created objectives that would transform a blighted area into a vibrant place that serves the area and has Village-wide appeal.

The first step in the process was acquiring the entire 10-acre parcel known as Spartan Square. This was vital to the success and future of this area. The Village of Romeoville acquired the property in 2008, and began making plans for redevelopment.

During the term of the existing leases, staff worked on environmental clean up caused by the previous dry cleaners and marketing the site. Upon completion of the leases, the building was demolished in 2013.

Over the years, significant improvements have been completed to enhance this redevelopment area including:
