Automated License Plate Readers

Automated License Plate Reader (LPR) technology is an important tool that helps Romeoville Police Department enhance public safety by providing timely investigative leads and assisting officers in locating stolen vehicles, wanted subjects, missing persons, and vehicles connected to criminal activity. By quickly identifying relevant information, LPR technology allows officers to respond more effectively to calls for service, develop investigative leads more efficiently, and allocate resources where they are needed most. This improved efficiency helps resolve incidents faster while supporting our mission to keep the community safe.

Romeoville Police Department is committed to ensuring that LPR technology is used responsibly and with respect for individual privacy. We have established comprehensive policies, procedures, auditing practices, and user accountability measures that are among the most robust in the industry. System activity is regularly monitored to detect and investigate potential misuse, and users are held accountable for adhering to all applicable laws and agency policies. By combining strong privacy safeguards with rigorous oversight, our agency has successfully leveraged LPR technology to improve public safety outcomes while maintaining the public’s trust and confidence in how the technology is used.

Access to Romeoville’s network is only granted to law enforcement agencies within Illinois that attest, or affirm, under penalty of perjury pursuant to 28 U.S.C. 1746, that they agree to comply with Illinois law 625 ILCS 5/2-130, which mandates that Illinois LPR data may not be used to investigate or enforce a law that interferes with a person’s right to choose or obtain reproductive health care services or any lawful health care services as defined by the Illinois Lawful Health Care Activity Act; or permits the detention or investigation of a person based on the person’s immigration status.
